We work in a great business!  No, we are not immune to the challenges of the economy.  Businesses have closed, payrolls and sales are down, home and auto purchases have been slashed, all affecting our business.  But, in spite of this, we still have much we can be thankful for, and we should not overlook this.

We are in a business that serves, and serve we do!  I remember my dad telling me (he was an agant in northern Michigan) years ago, what he loved about this business was the opportunity to restore lives.  Few businesses have the opportunity to turn tragedy into triumph, or make something positive out of something negative.  We do have this privilege every day, and through these opportunities we can build lifelong relationships where people actually count on us.

People do count on us daily.  Our Independent Agents and Auto-Owners get calls daily where people seek us out for advice.  Imagine that; they actually count on us to help shape their financial future.  With our help, maybe the bad times just aren’t so bad.  Through this opportunity to serve and counsel, we again build relationships that may last a lifetime.  Not a bad benefit.

We employ many within our industry.  This gives jobs and security, income for families to enjoy the fruits of life and their labors.  We stengthen the communities in which we reside with our income, our civic participation, and our community involvement.  We are viewed as part of the foundation of the community, both from a personal sense and also as a business participant.  We are often overlooked, sometimes forgotten, but always there when we are needed.  Not a bad position to be in for these times.

We give great peace of mind. I recently spoke with some friends and neighors about insurance.  It is interesting; no one really likes to talk about insurance until they need it.  And when people need it, they want it all; they expect to be taken care of.  That was the gist of the conversation I recently had.  They said for the most part, they don’t worry about insurance issues because they all felt they were well taken care of.  Two specifically said they had “peace of mind” on insurance issues.  Not too many other businesses offer this comfort.  Safe.  Sound.  Secure.

And when it comes to comfort, aren’t you glad to know you have the safety and security of an A.M. Best-rated, A++ (Superior) company, and one that has been recognized for great claims service, behind you?  People are worried about banks and other businesses surviving .  Many are worried about their own jobs.  But with us–our Independent Agents and Auto-Owners–you need not worry whether the company is going to be here or not.

It has been a challenge out there.  Many of you have commented to me on all the difficulties we have faced, not only in our business but also about life in general.  Despite it all, we work in a great business that has far-reaching potential to make a difference for so many.  It is a privilege to be in our role and to serve in the manner in which we do.  And so, while we are working through these challenging times, remember the reason we are in this business: to serve!  So as we serve, let’s be grateful for all the opportunities–and there will be many–that come our way.
